On 23 October 1863, Quintino Sella founded the Italian Alpine Club in Turin, at the Castello del Valentino. It was the first Italian mountaineering association, born out of an idea he had during his ascent of Monviso on 12 August of that year. The inaugural meeting lasted around three hours: it approved the constitution and appointed the first directors. Among the founders were Bartolomeo Gastaldi, the future vice-president, Giovanni Barracco and Paolo di Saint Robert.
